   Julian Temple’s first film, The Great Rock ’n’ roll Swindle (1980), was a cynical parody of the creation of the Sex Pistols. It was characterized by its portrayal of Malcolm McLaren’s thesis to manufacture a pop sensation in ten easy steps, including the memorable ‘cultivate hatred’. This was followed by Amnesty international fundraiser The Secret Policeman’s Other Ball (1982) and Absolute Beginners (1986), a musical based on Colin MacInnes’s novel celebrating teenage culture in 1950s Soho with a soundtrack boasting luminaries such as Paul Weller (himself a MacInnes aficionado) and David Bowie. Other films directed by Temple include his contribution to Aria (1987) and Earth Girls are Easy (1988), a farcical reflection of the lifestyle and values of Los Angeles culture.
